On 15th July 2016, National Commission for Human Rights (NCHR) received a delegation of free members from the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA).

The International IDEA is the only global intergovernmental organization with the mission to support sustainable democracy worldwide as its sole mandate.

Its vision is to be the primary global actor in sharing comparative knowledge and experience in support of democracy. International IDEA’s objectives are to support stronger democratic institutions and processes, and sustainable, effective and legitimate democracy in general.

The delegation visited NCHR seeking to learn from its special missions regarding Human Rights promotion and protection in Rwanda; and its role regarding the monitoring for the respect of Human Rights in different domains.

At NCHR, the team was received by Mrs. Madeleine NIRERE, the Chairperson of the National Commission for Human Rights together with the Commissioners, the Secretary General of the NCHR and some staff members.

The Chairperson briefed the delegation on the mandate of NCHR emphasizing on its overall mission of promoting and protecting Human Rights countrywide.

The delegation also briefed the members of NCHR on what International IDEA does like  developing, sharing and enabling the use of comparative knowledge in its key areas of expertise such as electoral processes, constitution building, political participation and representation, and democracy and development. They also talked about the important issues of gender, diversity, conflict and security as they relate to democracy and Human Rights.

After discussions, participants said the visit at NCHR was so constructive and informative since their hosts responded to their curiosity on Rwanda’s current Human Rights situation.
