This Monday, February 5, 2018, a delegation of Swedish Embassy in Rwanda led by the resident Swedish Ambassador to Rwanda, Mrs. Jenny Ohlsson, paid a courtesy call on the Commissioners. They exchanged on the mandate and the functioning of the National Commission for Human Rights and its best practices and achievements in promotion and protection of human rights in Rwanda.


Talking of the purpose of the visit, Ambassador Jenny Ohlsson said that they wanted to hear from the functioning of the National Commission and its challenges in its daily activities.                      The talks also were about how the National Commission for Human Rights can collaborate with Swedish Embassy in strengthening human rights culture in Rwanda as a country with a rule of law.


The talks focused on the Commission’s mission, organization and functioning, and the implementation of human rights in Rwanda in general. The Chairperson, Mrs. Nirere Madeleine highlighted the role of the Commission in promoting the culture of human rights in Rwanda through different activities of the Commission. Those activities include awareness campaigns of citizens about human rights, many activities aimed to prevent the violation of rights, monitoring of human rights in various places,...
Mrs. Nirere also explained the collaboration that exists between the National Commission for Human Rights and the Civil Society Organizations through different joint activities carried together aiming at promoting and protecting human rights in Rwanda.


In addition, the Chairperson talked about the current year 2017-2918 activities, among which NCHR will continue to collaborate with other organizations working in the field of human rights promotion in order to consolidate efforts in prevention and fight against human rights violations. In this regards, she highlighted that the Commission was designated as a National Preventive Mechanism in order to comply with the recommendations of Optional Protocol on the Convention against Torture.


Swedish delegation took into consideration all the observations made by the Commission and promised vowed to advocate for the National Commission for Human Rights in particular for the promotion and protection of human rights in Rwanda.
