Senate elections at the center of the talks

On September 2nd, 2019, the Chairperson of the National Commission for Human Rights (NCHR), Mrs. Madeleine Nirere,with all Commissioners, were received by the Chairperson of the National Electoral Commission (NEC), Prof. Kalisa Mbanda. Two main topics were on the agenda of the talks, namely the fate of the recommendations made by the NCHR regarding the last elections of the Deputies of September 2018 and the progress of the preparations of the senatorial elections.

In this regard, the Chairman of the NEC declared that they are going to continue with the implementation of remaining recommendations and informed the NCHR Authorities that the preparations for the Senatorial elections were on good track as volunteers (assessors) were trained on electoral process, laws and instructions governing elections.

The election campaign scheduled to run from August 27, 2019, in all Districts and Universities of Higher Institutions Learning both public and private and each candidate will benefit from equal time campaign. Thus, 12 Senators representing the Provinces and the City of Kigali will be elected on September 16, 2019; one Senator representing the Public Universities and Institutions of Higher Learning will be elected on September 17, 2019 while one Senator representing Private Universities and Institutions of Higher Learning will be elected on September 18, 2019.

The Chairpersons of both Commissions agreed to continue their collaboration before, during and after the Senatorial elections.
